Initial Teacher Training

We are pleased to be able to offer an Initial Teacher Training programme in Guernsey

This programme will enable candidates to train as either Primary (5-11 age range) or Secondary teachers.

Trainee Teachers will receive sponsorship by the States of Guernsey to undertake the PGCert Teaching in partnership with Middlesex University (Please see PGCert Teaching page for further information on this programme).

Alongside the PGCert content, trainees will receive bespoke training, designed and delivered by specialists at The Institute, which will include phase and subject specific training.

During the training year, trainees will spend the majority of their time in schools and will attend centre-based training sessions at The Institute most weeks. Trainees will gain experience of at least two school settings and regular observations will be used to assess trainees' progress towards meeting the Teachers' Standards.

On successful completion of the initial training year, candidates will work as a Guernsey Qualified Teacher (GQT) and complete their induction period, after which they can apply for QTS with the DfE.

The expectation is that those sponsored for this programme will complete a minimum of three years of employment with the States of Guernsey after qualifying  (including the year as a GQT) during which time they will also complete their induction period.

Please note places are dependent on the availability of suitable school placements, predicted vacancies that will be available on completion of the initial training year and a viable cohort size.
