Overview

National Vocational Qualifications are a work based qualification that recognises the skills and knowledge a person needs to care for others in a broad range of health & social care settings.

A Diploma in Health and Social Care is flexible to suit all fields of health and social care. Units (topics) are selected based on their suitability for the students work role, i.e. dementia, medication management.

Level 5 Leadership and management in health and social care is also available for those within a management role or leadership role.

Assessor and Internal Quality Assurer awards are also available for those wishing to assess knowledge and competence within health and social care.

NVQ applicants must be resident in the Bailiwick of Guernsey 
 

Course content

What will you study on the National Vocational Qualification ?

Learners completing a whole award will complete mandatory units (numbers are dependent on the pathway chosen) and a number of optional units to meet the credit requirements of the award. 

Learners are matched with a qualified assessor (or an assessor working towards achieving their assessor award) who will guide them throught the course. NVQs are achieved through acquiring knowledge and demonstrating skill within the individual's workplace. 

The available courses are:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Care
  • Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care
  • Level 3 Assessing Vocational Achievement
  • Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare
  • Level 5 Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services (Adult Management, Adult Residential Management, Adults Advanced Practice)   


Teaching

How is the National Vocational Qualification taught?

NVQs are achieved through acquiring knowledge and demonstrating skill within the individual’s workplace. Learning for NVQ is predominately self-directed, so the student is expected to read around topics and demonstrate their understanding with guidance from their assessor. 

Taught sessions are put on once a month at The Institute to support students. Study skills sessions are also available. Please contact The Institute for more information.

Entry requirements

Individuals wishing to undertake this course should be working in a health and social care role. As assessment takes place in the students workplace, their manager should support their application

£1,000 Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care
£950 Level 3 Assessing Vocational Achievement
£1,000 Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare
£1,100 Level 5 Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services

Funding may be available for States of Guernsey employees. Please discuss with your manager.
